THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNET
The Internet has changed nearly every aspect of modern life, but its origins go back further than most people imagine. The story begins in the late 1960s, during the Cold War, when the United States Department of Defense funded a research project called ARPANET. The goal was to create a network of computers that could continue working even if part of it was destroyed.
In 1969, the first message was sent between two computers — one at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the other at Stanford. The message was supposed to be the word «LOGIN», but the system crashed after only two letters. So, the very first text ever sent over the Internet was simply «LO».
During the 1970s and 1980s, more universities and research institutions joined the network. In 1989, a British scientist named Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web while working at CERN in Switzerland. He created a way to share documents online using web pages and hyperlinks. The first website appeared in 1991 and is still online today.
By the mid-1990s, the Internet had reached ordinary households. Email, search engines and online shopping became part of daily life. Mobile phones with Internet access appeared in the 2000s, completely transforming the way people communicate.
Today, more than five billion people use the Internet every day. It connects us, entertains us and gives us instant access to almost any information. However, it also brings new challenges — privacy concerns, misinformation and digital addiction. Understanding both the history and the impact of the Internet is essential for the citizens of the digital age.
