THE AMAZON RAINFOREST
The Amazon rainforest, often called the «lungs of the planet», is the largest tropical rainforest on Earth. Stretching across nine countries in South America, it covers more than 5.5 million square kilometres — an area larger than the whole of Western Europe. Brazil holds about 60% of the rainforest within its borders.
This vast ecosystem is home to an extraordinary variety of life. Scientists estimate that over 10% of all the world's known species live in the Amazon: more than 40,000 plant species, 1,300 bird species, 3,000 types of fish and around 430 species of mammals. New species are still being discovered every year.
The rainforest plays a crucial role in regulating the global climate. Its trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen, helping to slow down climate change. The Amazon also influences rainfall patterns far beyond South America — water vapour from its trees travels thousands of kilometres, watering crops as far away as the United States.
Unfortunately, the Amazon is under serious threat. Deforestation, mostly caused by cattle ranching, soybean farming and illegal logging, destroys vast areas of forest every year. Between 1985 and 2020, around 17% of the original Amazon rainforest was lost. Indigenous communities, who have lived in harmony with the forest for thousands of years, are also at risk.
Many scientists and organisations are now working to protect the Amazon. Sustainable agriculture, eco-tourism and stronger laws against illegal logging are some of the solutions being put in practice. Saving the rainforest is not just a local issue — it concerns the entire planet.
