MOUNT EVEREST
Mount Everest, situated in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and China (Tibet), is the highest mountain on Earth. Its peak rises 8,849 metres above sea level — about the cruising altitude of a passenger aircraft. The local Nepali name for the mountain is Sagarmatha, meaning «forehead of the sky», and in Tibetan it is called Chomolungma, «Goddess Mother of the World».
The mountain was first measured in 1856 by the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India, which calculated its height as exactly 29,000 feet (8,839 m). Modern technology has since refined this number, but Everest is still growing slowly, by about four millimetres per year, due to tectonic activity.
In 1953, New Zealander Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first people to reach the summit and return safely. Since then, more than 6,000 climbers have stood on top of the world. However, the climb is extremely dangerous: oxygen levels at the summit are only one third of those at sea level, temperatures can drop below −60 °C, and avalanches and storms strike without warning.
The Sherpa people of Nepal play a crucial role in expeditions. They guide climbers, carry equipment and have unmatched knowledge of the mountain. Sadly, more than 300 climbers have died on Everest, and many of their bodies remain on its slopes.
In recent years, Everest has become very crowded, with long queues forming near the summit during good-weather windows. Environmental damage and tourist litter are also serious concerns. Today, Nepal and China require permits, and there are growing efforts to clean the mountain and protect both climbers and the natural environment.
