HONEYBEES
Honeybees are among the most fascinating and important insects on Earth. They live in large colonies of up to 60,000 individuals, all working together as a single super-organism. Each bee has a specific role: there is one queen, who lays all the eggs; thousands of worker bees, who collect food, build the hive and care for the young; and several hundred drones, whose only job is to mate with the queen.
Bees are best known for producing honey. To make just one tablespoon of honey, bees must visit thousands of flowers and fly the equivalent distance of crossing several countries. Honey not only feeds the colony in winter but has also been used by humans for over 8,000 years as food, medicine and even a preservative.
More importantly, bees pollinate flowers as they collect nectar. About one third of all the food we eat — including most fruits, vegetables and nuts — depends on bee pollination. Without bees, our diet would be far less varied and much more expensive.
Unfortunately, bee populations are declining rapidly worldwide. Pesticides, loss of natural habitats, climate change and a parasite called the Varroa mite are among the main threats. In some regions, fewer flowers are available because of intensive farming. Scientists warn that the disappearance of bees would have a catastrophic effect on agriculture and ecosystems.
Fortunately, many people are taking action. Beekeepers, farmers and ordinary citizens are planting bee-friendly flowers, avoiding harmful pesticides, and supporting laws that protect pollinators. Even small gardens can become a refuge for bees. Saving the bees is, in fact, saving ourselves.
